Hiking the Seminole Canyon State Park Rim trail is about 8 miles round trip. Three to four hours. It is well marked, relatively flat, relatively easy and has a series of sheltered seats along the way, but it is a rocky trail. The vistas along the canyon rim make the hike worth while, particularly Presa Canyon and then the Panther Cave sighting at the very end of the trail. The view of the Rio Grande with its sheer canyon wall sides adds to the mix. And, of course, Mexico is just on the other side. The remains of a circle of rocks from a prehistoric wickiup in the first couple of miles of the trail stand out as testimony that folks have been around Seminole Canyon for over 10,000 years.
For many folks the 8 mile hike is not possible. Join us for a drive down the Rio Grande Trail to the Panther Cave Overlook. This trip will take you to the southernmost point of the park, which overlooks the place where Seminole Canyon intersects the Rio Grande River. Your guide will provide a general overview of the park and its history along the way and will help you spot the “panther” at Panther Cave. Bring your binoculars to get a better view!
