A Message From:

Stephanie Croatt, Superintendent of Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site

I would like to personally thank each of you for your interest in partnering with Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site in a Friends Group capacity. I am excited about the upcoming year and the exciting new programs that we will be offering.

Most of you are probably acquainted with the concept of a friend’s group, but for those of you who aren’t, here’s a short-defined answer:

State Park Friends Groups are volunteer-led, membership-based nonprofit partners that support a park site through volunteerism, fundraising and public education. Friends Groups also serve as an important link to the community.

In the past, Seminole Canyon’s main focus has been providing tours of some of the most spectacular rock art in the state of Texas. However, this year we are in the planning stages of offering additional programs to further the park’s goals, to extend the visitor outdoor experience, and to educate within our community.

Here is a list of some of the programs we are in the process of implementing:
  • Van tour to Panther Cave Overlook
  • Van tour of the park’s railroad and ranching history
  • Hike and kayak tour to Panther Cave
  • Community outreach
  • Educational programs offered to all 4 th graders in San Felipe Del Rio school district
So, the question is, how can a friends group help?

First of all, each and every one of you have something to offer. Some of you may be historians, archaeologist, or rock art enthusiasts. While others, may be good working with your hands, photographers, have great ideas, experts in fundraising, or just downright passionate about Seminole Canyon State Park! Whichever it may be, your skills and passion are needed. Members of a friends group can help by volunteering their time guiding tours, helping in educational outreach, donations to the park, work along park staff on projects, trail maintenance, trash pick-up, and taking photos for promotional purposes. Trust me, there is always something that needs to be done in a state park. There are also times when a friends group has ideas or would like to implement a new tour within the park. All these things are considered and partnered together with us here at Seminole Canyon.

From the park’s point of view, this is how members of a Friends Group can help at this time:

  • Volunteers to guide tours
  • Volunteers to lead various interpretive programs
  • Volunteers for community outreach
  • Volunteers to help with projects & trail clean up
  • Volunteers to coordinate fund raising

If you, or someone you know would like to partner with us in volunteering with the Friends Group for Seminole Canyon, please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself, or Sandy and Henny Sands.

Once again, thank you for your interest and willingness to help to preserve and cultivate Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site!

We welcome you to visit Seminole Canyon State Park to learn and explore millions of years of history.
